- Energy diagrams amd bond energies
A series of pages with interactive material about energy diagrams, bond making and breaking, and calculations involving bond energies. It uses the term "Enthalpy of reaction", which is the proper term for the heat evolved or absorbed during a reaction. This is aimed at A level, but is perfectly OK at GCSE. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the final two examples (nitrogen + oxygen, and hydrogen + oxygen) to work in any of the browsers that I commonly use. It's definitely worth a look up to that point, though.
Instructions for practical work
I have referred to practicalchemistry.org as a reliable source of instructions for experiments. If you find anything really good from other sources, could you let me know via the address on the about this site page of Chemguide.
- Energy changes and fuels menu
At the time of writing (June 2009), only two of the long list of experiments were quantitative, and both of those concerned combustion of alcohols. In fact, the acid-metal experiment could also be adapted easily to make it quantitative by using magnesium in order to get a fast reaction, and taking appropriate measurements. This reaction (involving magnesium powder and dilute sulfuric acid) is discussed in detail in the chapter.
